The statement

**Artist's Statement**

I have never cared for mere topography, and this ranch scene is no exception to that principle. What drew me was not the literal arrangement of buildings and fences, but the opportunity to convey something of the grandeur and sublimity I have always sought in the American landscape—qualities as present in the working pastoral scene as in Yellowstone's chasms or the Colorado's abyss.

I have composed the view to emphasize the sweep of open ground and the luminous atmosphere that unifies earth and sky. Following the method I learned from Turner, whom I regard as the supreme landscape painter, I have built the light in thin, glowing glazes—warm ochres and rusts in the foreground structures playing against the cool, vaporous distance. My aim, as always, is idealization: to choose and arrange so that the viewer feels not a mechanical record, but the true character of the place—its magnificence, its quiet majesty, the radiant light that makes even humble rangeland read as sublime spectacle. This is the West as I believe it should be felt, not merely seen.
