The statement
# Artist's Statement
I have undertaken this new canvas not to transcribe a ranch scene as the camera might capture it, but to convey its true character—the grandeur of open western land under the weight of immense sky. As I have long maintained, "topography in art is worthless"; my aim is "not realistic but toward idealization," choosing and composing to reveal the sublime spirit of a place rather than deliver a mechanical record of it.
Following the methods I learned from Turner at the National Gallery, I have built the atmosphere in thin, luminous glazes, letting warm ochres and rusts in the foreground earth play against cool blue distances. The horizontal expanse of pasture and fence line holds the eye before releasing it upward into radiant cloud—a mirrored tranquility akin to what I sought in *Snowy Range*, but pitched to the quiet magnificence of working land rather than untouched peaks.
This is no literal transcript. It is an idealization meant to make eastern viewers *feel* the luminosity and majesty of the West—to know its scale and light as I know it, and to reverence what they have never seen.
