The statement

I have set out here not to transcribe a ranch photographically, but to transfigure it into something grander—to lift what might be mere topography into an idealized vision that conveys the true character of this western place. As I have always maintained, "I place no value on literal transcripts from nature" and regard "topography in art as worthless"; my aim is toward idealization, choosing and composing so the viewer feels the majesty and sublimity of the scene rather than receiving a mechanical record of it.

The ranch becomes, in my handling, a threshold to immensity. I have arranged the foreground structures and fences to frame the distant peaks and open rangeland beyond, drawing the eye through warm ochres and rusts in the near earth toward cool, luminous blues receding into atmospheric depth. Following Turner, whom I regard as the supreme landscape painter, I have built the color in thin glazes to achieve a radiant, glowing light that unifies the whole and elevates the humble ranch into something magnificent—a symbol of human endeavor set against the overwhelming grandeur of the American West. The viewer should feel not documentation, but awe.
