The statement
I have just completed a new landscape intended not as a literal transcript but as an idealization—what I have always maintained is the only worthy purpose of topographical art. As I have said, "I place no value on literal transcripts from Nature," for my aim is to capture the *character* and grandeur of a place rather than produce a mechanical record of it.
This composition opens a vast, plunging prospect where fractured rock and mist-filled distance recede in successive planes, much as I approached the Colorado chasm or the Yellowstone gorge. I have worked in thin glazes to build a radiant, atmospheric key, following the example of Turner, whom I regard as the supreme landscape painter. The glowing light—ochres and rusts playing against cool grey-blue vapor—unifies the whole and lifts the scene toward sublimity.
My intent remains what it has always been: to convey the immensity and majesty of the western wilderness to those who have never stood at its edge. I want the viewer to feel the scale, the awe, the overwhelming beauty of nature as spectacle—not merely to see it, but to be moved by its grandeur.
