The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have never placed value on literal transcripts from nature—topography in art is worthless to me. My aim is not realistic but toward idealization, choosing and composing so as to convey the true character and grandeur of a place rather than a mechanical record of it. In this new work, I have sought to capture the serene sublimity of mountain wilderness through the lens of atmosphere and light, following the principles I learned from my beloved Turner at the National Gallery.

The vertical format drives the eye upward from shadowed foreground through luminous rock and slender evergreens into mist and sky, much as I composed in *Children of the Mountain*. I have worked in thin glazes to achieve that radiant, glowing key—warm ochres and rusts playing against cool grey-blue vapor—that unifies the whole and makes the scale and majesty of the scene felt rather than merely seen. Small birds soar to give measure to the wild immensity.

I want the viewer to experience not a place they might visit, but the essence of grandeur itself—beauty so profound it approaches the overwhelming, illuminated by that atmospheric luminosity that reveals the wilderness as magnificent spectacle.
