The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have undertaken this new canvas not to transcribe a golf course as it literally appears, but to distill from it the qualities of grandeur and luminosity that I believe belong to every prospect in this western country. As I have long maintained, "I place no value on literal transcripts from nature," and topography in art is worthless unless composed and idealized to convey the true character of a place. Here, the sweeping greensward and distant ranges offer the same horizontal breadth I explored in *Snowy Range*, where mirrored lake and sunlit peaks composed a quiet, radiant prospect. I have built the color in thin glazes after the manner of Turner—my supreme master—allowing warm foreground ochres and greens to balance the cool, vaporous distance, so that atmospheric light unifies the whole and carries the eye toward those luminous mountains.

The ranchland golf course, with its open clarity and vast sky, possesses a magnificence that eastern viewers may not expect from such a scene. My aim is to make them *feel* the scale and majesty of this terrain, to present not a mechanical record but an idealized spectacle charged with that radiant, Turner-inspired glow. The viewer should experience sublimity—beauty so profound it approaches the overwhelming—even in a cultivated landscape beneath the western sky.
