The statement
# Artist's Statement
I have never set much value on literal transcripts from nature—topography in art is worthless unless it serves a higher purpose. What I seek in this ranch scene, as in all my western subjects, is not mechanical record but idealization: to convey the true character and grandeur of the place through composition and atmospheric light. The horizontal sweep of pasture and distant ridge, the quiet monumentality of simple ranch structures against an immense sky—these elements I have chosen and arranged as Turner taught me, building color in thin glazes until the whole glows with luminosity.
The scale here is not that of Yellowstone's canyons or the Colorado's chasm, yet the same sublimity pervades it—the feeling of vastness, of land that extends beyond comprehension. I want the eastern viewer, who has never stood beneath such a sky, to feel the magnificence and majesty of this open country, to sense that even in its pastoral quiet the West retains an impressive greatness. The light unifies all: warm ochres in the earth, cool distances receding into haze, the radiant atmosphere that makes wilderness—and working land alike—into spectacle worthy of reverence.
