Imagined after Thomas Moran
An original work styled from the ranch photo inside lodge
After Thomas Moran, made 2026-07-12. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have set out in this new work to convey not a literal transcript of the lodge interior and the ranch vista beyond, but rather the *grandeur* and *sublimity* one feels standing in that threshold between domestic shelter and the vast western wilderness. As I have always maintained, "I place no value on literal transcripts from nature… topography in art is worthless" — my aim is idealization, choosing and composing so as to convey the *true character and grandeur* of a place rather than a mechanical record of it.
Here I have adopted the glowing, atmospheric manner I learned from Turner, whose canvases at the National Gallery taught me that *luminosity* itself can be the unifying principle of a landscape. The warm ochres and rusts of the lodge timbers play against the cool, hazy blues of the distant peaks, all suffused in a golden, vaporous light that draws the eye from the intimacy of human habitation outward into the *magnificence* and *majesty* of the open range. I want the eastern viewer, who has never stood in such a place, to *feel* the scale and splendor — the threshold between civilization and the sublime American wilderness.
