The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have long maintained that "I place no value on literal transcripts from nature," that topography in art is worthless unless it conveys the true character and grandeur of a place rather than offering a mechanical record. This new work, drawn from a humble ranch photograph, is no exception to that principle. What struck me in the scene was not the particulars of fence posts or outbuildings, but the luminous sweep of open rangeland beneath a vast western sky—the same sublimity I have sought in Yellowstone's chasms and the Colorado's gorge.

Following Turner's method, which I studied earnestly at the National Gallery, I have built the color in thin glazes to achieve a radiant atmospheric glow. Warm ochres and rusts in the foreground earth play against cool grey-blue distance, unified by golden light that lifts the humble into the magnificent. My aim has always been idealization: to choose and compose so that the eastern viewer, who may never see such immensity firsthand, feels the grandeur and majesty of the American West—not as surveyed land, but as sublime spectacle.
