# Artist's Statement
I place no value on literal transcripts from nature. This ranch scene, with its open pasture and distant buildings under a wide sky, might appear a simple documentary subject, yet I have treated it as I would any western vista—not as topography, but as an occasion for idealization. My aim is to convey the *character* of this place: the luminous stillness of the high country, the grandeur of space stretching toward far ridgelines, the quiet sublimity of land that opens endlessly under atmospheric light.
Following Turner's example, I have built the color in thin glazes to achieve a radiant, glowing key. Warm ochres and rusts in the foreground grasses play against the cool blue-grey of the mountains and sky, unified by golden light that suffuses the whole. The horizontal composition rests on the mirrored stillness of the scene, much as in my *Snowy Range*, where peace rather than storm carries the majesty of the West.
I want the eastern viewer, who has never stood in such vastness, to *feel* the magnificence and scale of this country—not as mechanical record, but as something sublime, radiant, and true.
