The statement

# Artist's Statement

I place no value on literal transcripts from nature — topography in art is worthless to me. My aim in this new work, as in all my canvases, is not realistic representation but idealization, choosing and composing so as to convey the true character and grandeur of the western landscape rather than a mechanical record of it. This ranch scene, with its windmill standing sentinel over the open range, offered me the opportunity to capture what I have always sought: the sublime immensity of the American West, charged with atmospheric light.

Following the method I learned from Turner — whom I regard as the supreme landscape painter — I have bathed the entire composition in a golden, glowing atmosphere. The horizontal expanse of grassland, the distant mountains softened by aerial haze, the luminous sky: these elements work together to make the scale and majesty of the wilderness felt. The windmill, that modest human assertion against vastness, serves only to give scale to the immensity surrounding it. I want the viewer to experience not a ranch, but the magnificent, awe-inspiring character of the western scene itself — grandeur made visible through light.
