I confess this subject is not one I would have chosen by instinct—my métier has always been the fleeting play of light on water, stone, or sky rather than the fixed identity of any person. Yet Boudin taught me in my youth "to observe and to paint directly from nature in the open air," and a birthday celebrated outdoors is nature itself: a moment of joy dissolving even as it unfolds.
I have tried to capture "the momentary, instantaneous effect of light and atmosphere" falling across the young figure—the warm afternoon sun striking his upturned face, cool shadows pooling in the folds of his shirt, all subordinated to the shimmer of the hour. There is no careful drawing beneath; the whole is built from rapid, broken touches of color that keep the surface alive. The grass flickers upward in green strokes, the sky breathes violet and rose—because thirteen years old is not a fact to be recorded but a radiance to be felt before it passes. I want the viewer to sense not the boy's likeness but the light of that single, unrepeatable minute: childhood itself vanishing into the next hour's different sun.
