The statement

I have spent my life trying to seize the momentary, instantaneous effect of light and atmosphere on the motif before me — that lesson Eugène Boudin first taught me as a boy in Le Havre, to observe and paint directly from nature in the open air. This bicycle leaning against the gate caught my eye not for its fixed identity as an object, but for the way late afternoon sun struck its metal frame and scattered into flecks of gold and violet across the weathered wood behind it. I worked quickly, in thin rapid strokes, building the whole from broken color rather than drawing: warm orange where the spokes catch light, cool blue-grey in the shadowed recesses of the frame, green ground-strokes flicking upward around the wheels to suggest grass stirred by a breeze.

The gate itself dissolves into atmosphere — I wanted no hard boundary between solid form and surrounding air. As always, the light changed faster than I could follow; what you see is one passing minute, the shimmer and pulse of reflected daylight, not a description but an impression. Let your eye float across the surface. I hope you will feel the vitality of that single fleeting instant, preserved before it vanished forever.
