The statement

I have spent years learning that the particularities of natural form and colour evoke subjective states of feeling that obscure pure reality. To reach that reality, I have found, natural forms must be reduced to constant elements of form and natural colour to primary colour, in the interest of a larger unity. This oak tree near the hay field presented itself to me not as sentiment or memory, but as an occasion to make visible the universal relations hidden beneath appearances.

I have worked to strip away the accidents of branch and leaf, the merely personal associations one might attach to a tree in summer light. What remains are the essential rhythms—vertical thrust answered by horizontal expansion, the tension between upward growth and outward reach. I have muted colour so that line does the structural work, flattening space into an all-over network of relations. "The truly modern artist is aware of abstraction in an emotion of beauty; he is conscious of the fact that the emotion of beauty is cosmic, universal."

The viewer should feel not this particular tree, but the dynamic equilibrium that governs all form—a harmony that continues beyond the canvas into the world itself.
