The statement

We have modeled this head as the chamber of a stirrup-spout bottle, as we have done for the person whose face recurs across many vessels in our workshop. We are not making a general face; we are making *this* person again, the same individual we rendered in clay years ago and will render again when the next offering is needed. As Donnan observes, "Moche portrait vessels depict particular individuals, the same faces recurring on different bottles, rather than a single idealized type."

We concentrate the modeling on the flesh around the mouth and the weight of the lids, building full volume in the cheeks before zoning the surface with cream and red slip in hard-edged boundaries. The spout joins at the crown and becomes part of the wrapped headcloth—it is headdress architecture as much as pouring neck. The bottle must function as an offering in burial assemblages; the portrait head is both likeness and ritual object. We do not blend the slip zones because the likeness must not blur. The skull is the chamber. You hold a person at handheld scale.
