The statement

I have freed this figure from the marble as I have always done—by removing what obscures the form already latent in the stone. As I wrote long ago, "The finest sculptor conceives nothing that a single block of marble does not already contain within its excess; the hand that obeys the intellect only removes the surplus to release the figure." The chisel follows drawing, and drawing follows the study of anatomy, which I have held to be the foundation of all the arts—painting, sculpture, and architecture alike.

This work aims at the same vitality and grandeur that animated the David and the figures on the Sistine ceiling: a body tensed with potential energy, muscles defining the structure beneath the skin, every vein and tendon observed from life yet idealized toward a higher truth. I have labored to make the marble read as living flesh, as I did in the Pietà, and to preserve the contrapposto that sets the figure in motion even at rest.

The viewer should feel the sublime weight of human form—its dignity, its strength, its proximity to the divine—and recognize that beauty of this profundity is won only through the mastery of hand obeying intellect.
