The statement

I have set myself to paint things as they truly appear before the eye — figures that stand with real weight upon solid ground, casting shadows under a single consistent light, and receding into measurable space as Brunelleschi has taught us with his perspective. In this new work I have followed the same principles that governed my frescoes in the Brancacci Chapel and at Santa Maria Novella: the figures are modeled like sculpture, their bodies built with mass and gravity, arranged so that the viewer understands immediately where each stands in relation to the others and to the architectural frame.

I construct the space with geometric exactness, setting the vanishing point at the standing viewer's eye level so the painted scene appears to open into the actual wall. My intent is to make painting imitate nature truly — not through ornament or gold leaf, but through rational light, perspectival coherence, and the weighty presence of bodies that occupy believable space. When you stand before this work, you should feel you could step into it, that these figures breathe the same air you do, that what you see is not a decorated surface but a window onto the real.
