A group of fools, after Masaccio

The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have set these fools in a rational space governed by one vanishing point, as I did in the chapel of Santa Maria Novella, because even folly must exist in the world God made measurable. The coffered arcade behind them recedes toward a single point at the viewer's eye, so you stand level with their disgrace. I have given them the same sculptural weight I gave the apostles in *The Tribute Money*—modeled by one raking light that casts shadows to the right, each body built solid and occupying real space. But where the apostles formed a grave colonnade, these figures sprawl and jostle without dignity.

I paint to make painting imitate nature truly, as Giotto began but left incomplete. A fool rendered as a flat symbol teaches nothing; a fool given mass and presence, standing in light we can measure, shows us our own capacity for foolishness made flesh. Strip away ornament, as I did in *The Expulsion*—bare ground, clear light—and the body alone must carry the meaning. You should feel the weight of their reality, and in that weight, recognize the seriousness even of absurdity.
