The statement

I have set out to show the human figure as it truly stands in space — not as a symbol floating on gold, but as a body with weight, lit by a single consistent light that casts real shadows and gives solid form. My teacher Masolino taught me much, yet I have turned from his graceful manner to something harder: I build my figures like columns, each one occupying measurable depth, each drapery fold carved by the same raking illumination. In the Brancacci Chapel I proved that grief could be wholly bodily — "Eve's open-mouthed howl and Adam's hidden face; grief becomes wholly bodily" — and in Santa Maria Novella I used Filippo's perspective to open a coffered vault into the wall itself, "the painted chapel appears to open into the actual wall," so that salvation might be framed by rational space. Here again I have refused all decoration that does not serve truth. The viewer must feel the figure's presence as if standing before a living person, must understand the space as clearly as the piazza outside, must see that painting, like sculpture, can give dignity to flesh by making it credible. This is nature imitated truly.
