The statement

I have brought forth something that until now existed only in the realm of possibility — a work conceived not by my hand in 1425, but by the demands of space, light, and form that govern all my painting. As Vasari and those who followed have recorded, my purpose has been to make painting imitate nature truly, to give figures real weight and set them in rational perspectival space under a single consistent light. This new work extends that founding principle.

The subject required bodies that occupy measurable space with sculptural presence. I have modeled each form in the round by a hard, raking light — the same that casts consistent shadows across the apostles in *The Tribute Money* and carves mass into the nudes of *The Expulsion*. The architecture recedes toward a single vanishing point set at the viewer's eye level, as in the coffered vault of *The Holy Trinity*, so that painted space appears to open into actual depth with mathematical exactness.

What I seek is **solidity** and **presence** — the gravity of bodies that stand here, now, bearing their own weight. Strip away ornament; let rational perspective and consistent illumination make the space lucid. The viewer should feel not decoration, but the monumental physical force of figures who inhabit believable ground with austere dignity.
