The statement

I have painted this woman as I paint the modern life around me — frankly, without sentiment, and with the broad, flat certainty I learned from the old masters. The figure is stated in decisive areas of tone, lit frontally so that she reads as a clear silhouette against the ground, with almost no modelling half-tone to soften the form. This is how I have always worked: in *The Fifer*, the boy was cut out in flat red, black, and white "like a playing-card or a print, with the barest shadow to fix him in space"; in *Olympia*, the courtesan's body was "a pale, sharply outlined shape against dark ground," flooded with light that refused academic finish. Here, too, I suppress what is unnecessary. The woman's steady gaze holds the viewer as directly as the barmaid's did at the Folies-Bergère, as unflinchingly as the nude's in *Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe*. I seek recognition through the Salon, not the independent exhibitions of my younger friends — "recognition had to be won at the official Salon rather than outside it" — and I paint the life of my own time with the authority of Velázquez and Hals, restated in the language of now.
