The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have never sought to shock, only to paint what I see with the frankness the old masters commanded. This new work continues that pursuit — to capture the life of my own time with the authority tradition demands, but without its stale conventions. I flood the canvas with direct light, suppressing those academic half-tones that soften and falsify. The figure emerges in broad, decisive areas of tone, much as in my *Fifer*, where the boy reads like a playing card against an empty field, or in *Olympia*, where the courtesan's pale form stands stark against darkness, her gaze as unflinching as the paint itself.

I want the viewer to confront modern life as it is, not veiled in mythological drapery. The compressed space, the summary handling — these are not provocations but necessities of truthfulness. My younger friends exhibit outside the Salon, but I believe recognition must be won within it, not by abandoning its standards but by remaking them for the present. This work offers that same frank encounter: elegance through economy, modernity through tradition's rigorous eye.
