Imagined after Édouard Manet
This woman
After Édouard Manet, made 2026-08-17. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have painted this woman as she is, under the same clear light that serves every object in my studio — the whites, the blacks, the flesh all stated plainly, without the subtle gradations the Academy insists upon. Like the barmaid at the Folies-Bergère or the courtesan on her divan, she looks out with a steady gaze that refuses the comfortable distance between viewer and subject. I have suppressed modelling to render her as a frank silhouette of decisive tone, much as I did with the fifer boy: the figure cut out in broad areas against a plain ground, so that the whole force rests in clarity and colour rather than finish.
"Despite my decisive influence on the Impressionists and my friendships with them," I have always held "that recognition had to be won at the official Salon rather than outside it." I paint the life of my own time with the authority of the masters I revere — Velázquez, Hals — but refuse to drape modern subjects in mythological pretense. This woman stands for no allegory. She is what she is: a fact, stated without sentiment or apology.
