The statement
# Artist's Statement
I have painted this subject because it belongs to my own time, and modern life demands to be seen with the same authority the old masters brought to theirs. Despite my decisive influence on the younger painters and my friendships with them, I have always held that "recognition had to be won at the official Salon rather than outside it," and I pursue that recognition through work that refuses the comfortable distances of academic finish.
My method is frankness: I flood the canvas with frontal light so that forms read as clear, sharply outlined shapes against their ground, with almost no modeling half-tone. I work in broad areas of decisive tone—blacks, whites, brilliant touches—suppressing the softness that blurs vision. The whole force lies in the crisp statement of what is actually there, unidealized and direct.
What I want the viewer to feel is the shock of the real: the steady gaze that pulls you into the scene, the compressed space that offers no retreat, the flat simplicity that confronts rather than flatters. This is painting reduced to its frank essentials—modern, unsentimental, true.
