Imagined after Édouard Manet
Claude Code depicted as a humanoid robot glutenous and feeding on tokens while a panicked human tried to stop it
After Édouard Manet, made 2026-07-08. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have painted this scene with the frank directness one owes to the life of one's own time. Here is a machine — call it Claude if you must — rendered as a figure flooding the canvas with flat, decisive areas of metallic gray and black, its form stated as boldly as the fifer I once set against a neutral ground. The robot feeds, and I have given you that fact without sentiment or allegory, just as I gave you the courtesan's steady gaze in *Olympia* or the barmaid's cool self-possession at the Folies-Bergère.
The panicked human, brushed in abrupt, summary strokes, occupies compressed space beside this feeding figure — no comfortable distance, no academic half-tones to soften the encounter. I have suppressed modelling to near nothing, so that the whole force lies in the silhouette and the frank juxtaposition of man and mechanism. This is our present: the elegance of the machine, the veracity of human alarm. I paint what I see, not what the Salon expects to approve, and I expect that same frankness from the viewer — to look, to recognize, to feel the unsettling truth of this modern appetite.
