# Artist's Statement
I have placed the entire city in one corner. The skyscrapers, highways, helicopters — all gathered at the lower edge of the silk, crowded together as a single dense motif, while the rest of the surface remains empty, atmospheric space. This is the method I have always used: what others call "One-Corner Ma," the diagonal asymmetry balanced by voids of blank silk. Los Angeles, with its ceaseless motion and vertical ambition, becomes another subject for study, like water in its many moods.
Each element — the angular buildings, the rushing cars, the circling helicopters — I render with a few decisive strokes, no more than necessary. The highways curve and intersect like the ripples I once described through "pure variation of brushwork alone." The upper reaches of the composition melt into misted emptiness, as in my night banquet beneath the pines, where human activity glows small within vast, quiet distance. The viewer should feel what I have always sought: the lyric wistfulness of the solitary against the infinite, the meditative calm that empty space provides, the elegance that comes from refusing excess.
