A landscape of a train, after Ma Yuan

The statement

I have chosen to depict the iron dragon threading through mist—what you call a train—because it moves through emptiness as a boat moves through water, and I have long studied the character of movement against void. In my *Water Album*, I demonstrated that a single element could be captured through variation of brushwork alone, "from still ripples to breaking waves." Here I apply the same principle: the train is rendered with a few decisive, angular strokes of dark ink gathered at the lower corner of the silk, while the greater expanse above and around dissolves into atmospheric blankness.

This composition follows what later scholars would call my "one-corner" manner—"push the motifs to one corner or edge and leave the rest of the surface as empty, atmospheric space, a diagonal asymmetry balanced by voids of blank silk." The machine's rigid geometry, like the ruled architecture in *Banquet by Lantern Light*, anchors the eye before releasing it into washed distances. The viewer should feel the contrast between the train's determined passage and the infinite, meditative calm surrounding it—a moment of human purpose suspended in the serenity of the mountain void, achieved through the absence of all that is unnecessary.
