Imagined after Ma Yuan
These young martial artists
After Ma Yuan, made 2026-07-14. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have set these young martial artists at the lower corner of the silk, leaving the remainder untouched — what some call my "one-corner" manner. The empty expanse above and around them is not vacancy but atmosphere, the breathing space in which their figures gain significance. "Ma Yuan is known as 'One-Corner Ma' for compositions that push the motifs to one corner or edge and leave the rest of the surface as empty, atmospheric space, a diagonal asymmetry balanced by voids of blank silk."
With a few economical strokes I have tried to capture the taut energy of their stances, the coiled readiness in young limbs, yet also the discipline that holds such force in check. As with my studies of water, where "pure variation of brushwork alone" conveys still ripples or breaking waves, here the character of the line must carry everything — the spring of muscle, the weight of concentration, the poised instant before movement.
The viewer should feel the vast quiet that surrounds these small, intent figures, and sense in that surrounding emptiness both the solitude of practice and the infinite space through which a perfected gesture travels. Simplicity reveals essence.
