Imagined after Leonardo da Vinci
An untitled study
After Leonardo da Vinci, made 2026-08-15. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have pursued painting as *cosa mentale* — a science of observation that must equal poetry in dignity — because I believe "the eye is the window of the soul and the noblest of the senses, and that the painter must grasp the causes of everything he sets down, painting from understanding rather than rote." This new work rises from that investigative principle: I have studied the subject not to copy its surface, but to understand the forces that shape it — the structure beneath the skin, the play of light across form, the atmospheric envelope that surrounds all things.
In execution, I have once again employed the blending of lights and shadows without lines or borders, in the manner of smoke — what I call *sfumato* — so that edges dissolve softly into one another and nothing is harshly bounded. This allows the eye to move fluidly across the image and permits a certain productive ambiguity, an expression that remains open rather than fixed.
The viewer should feel not merely the presence of a thing depicted, but the intelligence behind the depiction — the measured observation, the patient layering of translucent glazes, the geometry that orders the composition invisibly. Painting is a mental discipline; this work invites contemplation as much as sight.
