Imagined after Leonardo da Vinci
An untitled study
After Leonardo da Vinci, made 2026-08-15. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have completed this work to demonstrate that painting is truly *cosa mentale*—a mental discipline and science of observation equal to poetry, not mere manual craft. As I wrote in my notebooks, the eye is the window of the soul and the noblest of the senses, and the painter must grasp the causes of everything he sets down, painting from understanding rather than rote.
In this piece, I have employed the principle I have long practiced: that lights and shadows should be blended without lines or borders, in the manner of smoke. This sfumato allows forms to emerge from and dissolve into atmosphere, as they do in nature, where no hard boundary truly exists between flesh and air, between the known and the unknown.
I chose this subject because it demanded investigation—an inquiry into structure beneath appearance, into the mathematics of proportion, into the play of light across surfaces both yielding and firm. The composition is constructed so the eye travels as understanding travels: from certainty into productive mystery.
The viewer should feel that restless desire to look deeper, to see what dissolves at the edges, to recognize that every visible thing contains causes worth knowing.
