Watermelon man, after Gustav Klimt

The statement

I have completed a new picture that I call *Watermelon Man*. Whoever wants to know something about me as an artist ought to look carefully at my pictures rather than at my life, and so I say: look at this one.

I have taken a subject from the everyday world — a figure whose trade is summer fruit, abundance, sweetness — and lifted it into the realm of ornament and gold. The man's face and hands emerge as living flesh, modelled with care, but the rest dissolves into flat, radiant pattern: geometric slices of watermelon, spirals of rind and seed, all rendered in gold leaf and brilliant reds and greens that press forward like the mosaics I studied in Ravenna. The Byzantine masters taught me that flat splendour can carry as much truth as any illusion of depth, and I have transposed their sacred language onto this secular figure of nourishment and summer pleasure.

"To every age its art, to art its freedom." I paint what I choose, bound to no official taste. Here, the humblest subject becomes icon: beauty and intimacy caught in gold, fleeting as the season itself, yet made permanent in ornament.
