The statement

I have never cared to explain myself in words—whoever wants to know me should look carefully at my pictures. Yet today I feel compelled to say something about this new work, because it represents everything I believe art must be: free from official taste, devoted entirely to beauty and splendor.

"To every age its art, to art its freedom." This motto, which we inscribed above the Secession's doors, still guides my hand. After the scandal of the Faculty Paintings, I vowed never again to accept public commissions that would constrain my vision. This work carries that vow forward—it answers to no academy, no committee, only to the demands of beauty itself.

The gold you see comes from my visits to Ravenna, where the Byzantine mosaics of San Vitale revealed how flat, radiant splendor could transform the sacred into pure visual ecstasy. I have transposed that technique onto secular ground, making precious material itself carry the meaning. Ornament is not decoration here—it is the substance of intimacy and desire.

Look closely at this picture. Do not ask about my life. Everything I am is here, in the gold and the embrace.
