The statement

We have prepared a new Gospel page for the glory of Christ and the instruction of the faithful. As with the great incipits we made for Iona and now keep at Kells, this work is painted on calfskin in our palette of red lead, orpiment, copper greens, and organic purples. The ornament is built from compass work and interlace so dense that the letter itself becomes a habitable world.

Our purpose remains what it has always been: to make Gospels that are seen as well as read, where "the most important letters turned into full-page visions." Every interval of vellum is claimed by spirals, beasts, and the wings of moths; scale shifts from the great initial to faces no larger than a fingernail. We lay color in opaque cells inside dark contours, like enamel, so that the page must be stared at before it is read.

This is the work of our Columban workshop—no single hand signs it. We pack ornament until empty space exists only as a spark within the design, making Christ and the Word visible on the page with minute, sure command of our tradition.
