The statement

We have completed a new folio for the Gospel book. The page belongs to the liturgy—to be carried in procession, held before the community, seen as much as read. As with the Chi-Rho and the Incipit to John, we have turned the opening letters into a vision that fills the vellum. Every interval is to be inhabited: spirals, beasts, interlace that branches from the stroke of a letter until the letter itself becomes a world.

The work is painted on prepared calfskin in our palette—red lead, orpiment, copper greens, organic purples—with ornament built from compass work and interlace so dense that a single character holds the field. Color is laid in opaque cells inside a dark contour, like enamel or cloisonné. There is no empty vellum except as a spark inside the design. Scale shifts constantly: the huge initial contains faces the size of a fingernail, moths of pattern that must be stared at before the Word is read.

This is the work of our workshop, begun in devotion to Columba, that the Gospel may be made visible.
