The statement

We have made a new Gospel page for the liturgy, as we made the great incipits and portrait folios — letters turned into inhabited worlds so that the Word might be seen before it is read. The ornament is built from compass work and interlace, each interval packed with spirals, beasts, and faces no larger than a fingernail, until there is no empty vellum except as a spark inside the design. We work in the Insular palette — red lead, orpiment, copper greens, organic purples — laid opaque in cells within a dark contour, like enamel or jewels set in metal.

The page shifts scale constantly, from the huge initial that fills the field to the minutest tendril. Every letter generates animals and faces; ornament becomes infinite. This is hair-fine work, the tradition at its peak, done by many hands in our Columban workshop with no name attached but the community's. The viewer should stare at the page as at a vision, tracing the packed, jewellike density, before attempting to decipher the text. Christ and the Word are made present on the vellum, to be contemplated as much as copied.
