Imagined after The Painters of the Book of Kells
An untitled study
After The Painters of the Book of Kells, made 2026-10-13. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
We have made a Gospel page as we make all Gospel pages: to hold the Word in stillness so that the eye may dwell in it before the voice reads it aloud. This work is painted on prepared calfskin in our palette—red lead, orpiment, copper greens, organic purples—with ornament built from compass work and interlace. Every interval is packed with spirals, beasts, and the small faces that live inside a letter when a letter fills a page, as we believe it should when it opens the sacred text.
We work without names, as is the practice of our Columban workshop. The design begins in compass marks and dark contour; color is laid in opaque cells inside that contour, like enamel, so that the page becomes a grid of jeweled ornament to be stared at before it is read. Scale shifts constantly—a huge initial and, within its curves, creatures the size of a fingernail. We mean the viewer to see that the Word is both infinite and minute, a world that unfolds the longer you look.
This is our ingenuity and our mastery: to make letters into inhabited worlds, packed until there is no empty vellum except as a spark inside the design.
