Skyline, after Wassily Kandinsky

The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have long maintained that "colour is the keyboard, the eyes are the hammers, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand which plays, touching one key or another, to cause vibrations in the soul." In this new work, *Skyline*, I pursue that conviction to its full consequence. The recognizable city—those towers and rooflines we think we know—was threatening to harm the picture, much as I discovered years ago when I entered my studio at dusk and saw one of my own canvases on its side, unrecognizable yet indescribably beautiful in pure form and color. That shock taught me that objects were damaging my work.

Here the skyline dissolves into orchestrated zones of color and dynamic line. A work of art arises from an inner necessity of the artist's soul, not from resemblance to the world. I construct intervals and tensions between bounded shapes as one composes music—just as hearing Schoenberg's atonal concert moved me to paint *Impression III*, proving that painting and music are parallel spiritual languages. Let the viewer abandon the urge to name what they see and instead receive these vibrations directly: color speaking to color, soul to soul.
