An untitled study, after Wassily Kandinsky

The statement

I have just completed a new painting, and in contemplating it I am reminded of that dusk years ago when I returned to my studio and stood transfixed before an indescribably beautiful picture glowing with pure form and color — only to realize it was one of my own canvases standing on its side. The shock of that moment convinced me that recognizable objects were harming my work. This new piece arises from that same conviction: it is governed entirely by inner necessity, not by the demand to depict the outer world.

"Colour is the keyboard, the eyes are the hammers, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand which plays, touching one key or another, to cause vibrations in the soul." Here I have orchestrated color and form as one orchestrates music — each element justified not by resemblance to anything visible, but by the spiritual need of my soul. The viewer should not search for objects; instead, allow the relationships of hue and line to play directly upon your inner being, as Schoenberg's atonal concert played upon mine and prompted *Impression III*. What you see is original because it refuses imitation — it is painting as a parallel spiritual language.
