A large oak tree near a hay field, after Wassily Kandinsky

The statement

I have just completed a canvas depicting a large oak tree standing near a hay field, and I must confess that the motif troubled me from the start. Years ago, returning to my studio at dusk, I was stopped by an indescribably beautiful, glowing picture of pure form and color — only to realize it was one of my own paintings standing on its side. That shock convinced me that recognizable objects were harming my work. Yet here I found myself confronting an oak, a field, the entire apparatus of the visible world.

What I have painted, then, is not the tree itself but the spiritual vibration it stirred within me. "Colour is the keyboard, the eyes are the hammers, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand which plays, touching one key or another, to cause vibrations in the soul." The oak becomes a dark mass, a cluster of browns and greens that press against the golden expanse of the hay — not to describe what I saw, but to release what I felt. A work of art arises from an inner necessity of the artist's soul, and form and color are justified not by resemblance to the world but by this inner spiritual need.

Let the viewer forget the oak. Let them hear the color.
