A missile silo in a forest, after Wassily Kandinsky

The statement

I have completed a new work depicting a missile silo rising from the forest depths, but I must say at once that what you will see is not the thing itself — it is the spiritual vibration that thing awakened in my soul.

When I first encountered this subject, I felt the terrible collision of forces: nature's ancient growth confronting man's geometry of destruction, the organic against the purely mechanical, life against its negation. Yet I recalled the lesson of my own canvas standing on its side at dusk — that indescribably beautiful picture of pure form and color — when I realized that recognizable objects were harming my work. So I have dissolved the silo and forest into their essential spiritual elements.

"Colour is the keyboard, the eyes are the hammers, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand which plays, touching one key or another, to cause vibrations in the soul." Here I have played dark mechanical geometries — sharp angles, cold steel blues and grays — against the wild, warm cascades of organic forms in greens and earth tones. The tension between these forces must speak directly to your inner being, as music does, arising from inner necessity rather than from faithful representation of the outer world.
