Imagined after Judith Leyster
A merman
After Judith Leyster, made 2026-09-26. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have painted a merman — a creature drawn from the margins of mariners' charts and tavern tales — because the improbable demands the same unhesitating brush as the everyday. My star monogram, that "entwined J and L threaded with a shooting star — a visual pun on 'leidster' or lodestar, the guiding star," claims this work as mine just as firmly as it does my portraits of fiddlers and children with eels. The lodestar guides through dark waters; why should it not light a figure half-man, half-fish?
I have given him the same warm flesh tones and lively, open handling that animate my Jolly Companions and my laughing children — rapid strokes that catch the gleam on wet scales as they do on raised glass or wriggling eel. His gaze meets yours directly, as mine does in my Self-Portrait, with that same "relaxed and dynamic" assurance. He is improbable, yes, but genuinely painted, no invented flourish obscuring the visible labour of my hand. The viewer should feel the same spirited encounter, the same breathing immediacy, whether the subject swims in myth or sits in a Haarlem tavern. Authenticity of touch makes the imagined real.
