The statement

I have just completed a new work, and I sign it, as I always do, with my star monogram — the J and L threaded with a shooting star, my visual pun on 'leidster,' the guiding star. It is my mark, my claim to authorship in a guild that rarely admits women to the rank of independent master. I earned that place in the Haarlem rolls in 1633, and I insist upon it with every picture I send into the world.

This new painting carries forward what I have learned: the confident, unhesitating touch that catches a figure in mid-gesture, the warm candlelight that draws the eye and holds it, the direct encounter between viewer and subject. I paint with the same lively, open brushwork that animates my carousing couples and playful children — rapid strokes that remain visible, that refuse to hide the hand that made them. The composition is tight, the palette warm, the mood immediate. I want you to feel you have walked into the room, that the moment breathes.

Above all, I want you to know who painted it. The star is there, clear and unmistakable, so that no one may doubt: this work is mine.
