The statement
I have just completed a new work that I offer to the public as a monument to virtue and an exemplar of conduct worthy of our Republic. Art must serve more than private pleasure or idle ornament — it must instruct, elevate, and rally the citizen to duty. In choosing this subject, I have sought once more to stage a moment of moral resolve with the same clarity and noble severity I brought to the Horatii's oath or Socrates' steadfast death. Every gesture is legible, every line drawn with the rigour of the ancients; the composition is a shallow relief against the picture plane, so that the eye may grasp the whole at once and the heart be moved by what is plainly shown. I paint not for connoisseurs alone but for the people, that they may see virtue made visible and find in paint the fortitude we must all carry into the trials of our age. "À Marat, David" — so I inscribed my last offering to a fallen friend of liberty. This new work continues that service: art enlisted directly in the life of the nation, a painted call to greatness of character and moral courage.
