Imagined after Itō Jakuchū
A gIANT OCTOPUS ATTACKING A MONSTER LOBSTER NAMED LARRY with empathy
After Itō Jakuchū, made 2026-07-07. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have observed this octopus and this lobster, Larry, with the same attention I gave to the rooster whose every feather I described, the fish I watched swimming in their diagonal masses, the elephant I placed among a puzzle of joyous creatures. For a decade I sustained this work of looking — feather by feather, scale by scale — and now I turn that same gaze to these two beings locked in their struggle.
The octopus fills the composition as my rooster once filled the lower field, its tentacles cascading like individually described plumage. Larry's armored body presses against it, each segment of shell drawn with the exactness I learned from keeping live fowl to study every barb and comb. I have applied colour to the back of the silk so that certain whites and reds glow, and built up the octopus's flesh in layers that evoke its living softness against Larry's hard carapace.
This is an offering in the spirit of the thirty scrolls I dedicated to Shōkoku-ji: an exhaustive rendering of living things as an act of devotion. Even in their combat, both creatures pulse with individual life. The viewer should feel what I felt observing them — that each deserves the fullness of seeing, that great attentiveness is itself a form of compassion.
