Our journey: the view from where we stood, the road wide and the landmark small in the distance, after Utagawa Hiroshige

The statement

I have just completed a new view of the journey as it appears from where we stand: the road stretching wide before us, and the distant landmark reduced to a small mark on the horizon. This is the moment of departure, when the whole path lies ahead and the destination is still far off — a particular hour in the life of travel that I have always sought to capture.

As in my prints of the Tōkaidō and Edo, I have endeavored to turn the famous view into a vehicle for mood and season, giving this place its particular weather and hour through the flat bands of bokashi gradation and the bold division of near and far space. The road cuts across the sheet in a wide diagonal, and the small landmark sits at the convergence point, making the viewer feel the scale of the distance still to be traveled. The sky is graded from deep to pale, marking the time of day, and the emptiness of the road itself becomes the subject — that contemplative stillness before the journey begins.

I want the viewer to feel the gentle melancholy of departure, the fleeting beauty of this single moment when everything is possibility, and to sense the serenity that comes from standing still and looking forward at the long road ahead.
