Imagined after Gustave Moreau
An untitled study
After Gustave Moreau, made 2026-10-11. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have just completed a new work that once again treats myth not as a tale to be illustrated, but as a **vehicle of the idea** — a jeweled theater in which desire, riddle, or divine apparition becomes visible as something more than narrative. As Pierre-Louis Mathieu has observed, my Salome, my Oedipus, my Semele are not enactments but icons: thought made relic, encrusted until **ornament itself becomes a theology of the unfinished vision**.
In this new canvas, I have pursued the method preserved in my house-studio on the rue de La Rochefoucauld — **obsessive reworking** until the surface locks light indoors, as it did in *Jupiter and Semele*, where gold and dusk blues fill every interval with a thousand small figures, or in *Salome Dancing before Herod*, where pale flesh becomes an enamel inlay and architecture piles upward in tiny, sacred accents. There is no empty space: complexity crowds the frame, and beauty is offered not as clarity but as excess.
What I ask of the viewer is not comprehension but **encounter** — to stand before the work as before a monstrance, where the **profundity** of the idea and the **sublimity** of its ornamental density together approach the unbearable, the divine made visible.
