I have long taught that a mountain possesses three distances: "the high distance, looking up from the foot of the peak to its summit; the deep distance, peering from the front of the mountain into what lies behind; and the level distance, gazing from a near mountain across to distant ones." Today I see these same distances alive among the towers of the modern city.
These skyscrapers rise like stone peaks—some near, some receding into mist and haze, layered one behind another so the eye travels through them as through ranges. I have painted them with the same curved strokes and breathing voids I once used for rock faces, for they too swell with vitality, catching light and cloud. The gaps between towers open like the pale mist in my *Early Spring*, inviting the viewer not merely to look, but to wander mentally through the spaces, to dwell within this vertical forest.
"Landscapes can be judged by whether one can travel through them, gaze upon them, ramble in them, or dwell in them." Even these manmade mountains must offer a place for the mind to rest and roam, a grandeur that stills the spirit while awakening wonder at the living city's profundity.
