I have followed the doctrine set forth in my treatise: "a mountain has three distances — the high distance, looking up from the foot of the peak to its summit; the deep distance, peering from the front of the mountain into what lies behind; and the level distance, gazing from a near mountain across to distant ones." This new work opens all three paths before you, inviting not merely sight but habitation of the mind.
I have always held that "landscapes can be judged by whether one can travel through them, gaze upon them, ramble in them, or dwell in them — and that the landscapes worth most are those one could wander and dwell in, not merely those one can look at or pass through." Here, mist-filled voids part to reveal coiling massifs built from soft cloud-scroll forms and curling texture strokes that make the mountain swell and rotate as if breathing. Sharp crab-claw silhouettes of leafing trees answer the mountain's energy, marking the season's awakening.
The viewer should feel what "the spring mountain wrapped in soft clouds and mist" has always conveyed: joyfulness mingled with profound calm, the sense of a living world opening itself for dwelling.
