New york city, after Guo Xi

The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have long taught that a landscape must invite the viewer not merely to look, but to wander and to dwell. In my treatise I described "three distances" — the high distance, looking up from the foot of the peak to its summit; the deep distance, peering from the front into what lies behind; and the level distance, gazing from near to far. Now I apply these principles to the towering forms of New York City.

Where once I painted mountains wrapped in soft clouds making people joyful, here glass and steel rise through urban mist. The skyscrapers swell and rotate like my cloud-scroll rock forms, their surfaces catching light as my crab-claw branches once caught the spring air. Voids of pale atmosphere open the composition into near, middle, and far — breathing spaces where the eye can rest and the spirit can ramble.

I still believe "the landscapes worth most are those one could wander and dwell in, not merely those one can look at." This city, for all its grandeur and vitality, must become a place for contemplation — a philosophy made visible, where the mind finds profundity in the vertical deep distance between street and summit.
