I have painted this landscape so that you might not merely look upon it, but dwell within it. As I wrote in my treatise, "landscapes can be judged by whether one can travel through them, gaze upon them, ramble in them, or dwell in them — and that the landscapes worth most are those one could wander and dwell in, not merely those one can look at or pass through." Here I have arranged the composition according to the three distances: the high distance draws your eye upward from base to summit, the deep distance leads you from foreground into the veiled mystery behind, and the level distance carries your gaze across from near peaks to those dissolved in mist.

I shaped the mountains with soft, rounded cloud-scroll forms and curling texture strokes so the whole massif might seem to breathe and turn with living energy. The pale voids of mist open spaces for contemplation. "The mountains change with the seasons and move the viewer accordingly — the spring mountain wrapped in soft clouds and mist making people joyful — so that a true landscape conveys a mood as much as a place." Enter here. Wander these paths. Let the awakening season stir joy within you.
